A Calming, Minimalist Retreat – West Lakes Bathroom Renovation
What was once a tired, dated bathroom in this West Lakes home is now a fresh, light-filled space designed for a young couple wanting function, calm, and effortless style. The original layout was cramped and lacked storage, making the bathroom feel smaller than it was. Outdated finishes and poor lighting added to the feeling of a space that simply wasn’t working for their lifestyle.
Our brief was to create a clean, modern bathroom that prioritised ease of use, timeless design, and a sense of tranquility. With only one main bathroom in the home, it needed to work hard daily — but look effortless doing it.
Before the Renovation
The original bathroom featured bulky cabinetry, dated tapware, and minimal lighting. The vanity felt heavy and intrusive, and the shower area didn’t make good use of space. There was no clear focal point, and the overall impression was dark and cluttered.
Bringing the Vision to Life
We began by completely reworking the vanity zone — replacing the old cabinetry with a floating unit to instantly create the illusion of more space. The timber-look benchtop introduced warmth and contrast, while the sleek vessel basin kept the look clean and minimal. A round, backlit mirror not only added functionality for grooming and daily routines, but also brought soft ambient lighting that elevated the entire room.
Matte black tapware was chosen to provide a bold, modern contrast against the lighter tones — a consistent theme throughout the space.
A Seamless Shower Solution
The old shower was removed in favour of a large, open walk-in shower that feels much more spacious. With no need for a step or threshold, the continuous floor tiling enhances the room’s flow. We installed dual showerheads — both rain and handheld — in matte black, allowing for flexibility and function without compromising on style.
A subtle recessed niche keeps shower products neatly tucked away, and the linear drain offers a clean, minimalist finish underfoot.
The Finishing Touches
Plantation shutters were retained and refreshed to maintain privacy while allowing plenty of natural light to filter through. Large format tiles in a soft, neutral tone were used floor-to-ceiling to enhance the sense of calm and create an easy-clean surface that’s perfect for busy mornings.
A single control mixer with a sleek stainless finish provides simplicity and a tactile experience, echoing the minimalist theme carried throughout the design.
From Dated to Dreamy – A Total Transformation
This West Lakes bathroom is now completely unrecognisable from its original form. Thoughtful material choices, considered lighting, and clever use of space have delivered a bathroom that feels bigger, brighter, and far more functional.
What was once the most underwhelming room in the house is now a space the couple genuinely enjoys spending time in — a calm, contemporary retreat that perfectly suits their everyday needs and aesthetic taste.
